A front load washer does some basic things differently than a top load washer. If you look at one, the first thing you'll notice is that it doesn't have a stirrer. Instead of hitting clothes back and forth in the water, she rotates them out of the water. Gravity makes them fall back into the mud. This washer design simulates the action of an agitator with one major benefit. You almost don't need much water to complete the process. This stirring method creates a lot of time in water and in some cases requires only half the water volume of a standard top-loading washer. Saving water isn't the only benefit either. Half the water equals half the energy required to heat it up, spin it and later remove it.

Front loading washers can also handle larger loads. Where an old top-loading washer can wash between 12 and 16 lbs (5.44 to 7.25 kg) of laundry per load, front-loading modes can handle loads of up to 20 lbs (9 kg). This means half the water consumption and more washing capacity.

The energy efficiency of the front-load washer design isn't just about reducing water consumption and increasing the load capacity. Many front loaders are very effective when it comes to taking out residual water from clothes as well. Removing more water compared to standard top-loading machines means less drying time and savings on the drying side of the process as well. Next-generation washers have also made the switch to more energy efficient direct drive systems that still generate adequate speed and torque, but do so with minimal energy consumption. As an added benefit, these systems require less "interior space" of the machine and result in a more efficient and lightweight design.

From a design standpoint, front-loading washers can be easy to install. When you don't have to worry about keeping the top of the unit empty, you can stack your washer and dryer set in a small utility area without requiring a major home renovation and a large appliance footprint.
