Borax (sodium tetraborate)
Contrary to popular belief, borax and boric acid are not the same chemical compounds. According to the accounts, both may be equally effective at killing ants in the home.

Like boric acid, do not use baits made with borax that children or pets can reach.

Make a solution of borax, sugar, and warm water using the same procedure as you would for boric acid.

Find borax at your local hardware and gardening store or online.

Give your houseplants an ant advantage
Check your houseplants for swarms of ants, which may indicate nests under the soil. Get rid of any plants that appear to be infested.

Prevent ants from building homes in your plants by surrounding citrus peels with lemon or orange.

Stay outdoors
Keep your lawn clean from debris. Cut off any vines or plants that come into contact with or lean against the exterior walls and windows of your home. These can make it easier for ants to enter your home.

Cut off their food source
Eliminating the problem before it starts is the best way to get rid of ants. You can do this by making sure there are no food sources readily available to them.

This will entail keeping food tightly sealed in containers or plastic bags. Keep in mind that ants are attracted to sweet and starchy things like sugar, honey, and cornmeal.

You also need to be vigilant about cleaning up the crumbs from your home. Don't forget to clean:

Underneath and around existing appliances in your kitchen
In the cushions of the sofa
In trash buckets
Areas of the home where your family eats or prepares food
Pet food can also attract ants. Remove pet bowls as soon as your pet is finished eating. Wash the containers to get rid of food smell.

Determine how they entered
It can be impossible to close every nook and cranny, but check your home for cracks in the walls and holes near floorboards and the radiator. You can fill it up or treat it with a repellant. Also check for cracks in the window screens, which you can fix.
